The IAC Café / Re: Conventions and choices

Isnt responder's hand too strong for fit-showing jump shift? I must admit I plain HATE when passed hand imposes game, but here imho, hand got so much better after 1S opening that looks strong enough for nice full splinter to 4C. That will make opener super happy; he can cuebid or just check RKC, aware of 9card fit and bid the 6S.
But sure thing Drury would help lots as it saves tons of space compared to splinter.

I've seen some of his lessons before somewhere else and was thrilled to see him now in IAC. IMHO this first lesson was beyond excellent, such amazing example boards, great approach to students and fantastic explanations of all why's and because's.
!H Huge thanks to organizers in IAC, Arik and Karen with hope it lasts... forever? :)

glad you are posting, Ken.  I often read them but feel I have little to contribute, just so you know there's at least one more reading your posts. :)
That's all I'd say too... I love reading posts from ken and oliver.

The IAC Café / Re: An idea - Teams of 2
« on: June 23, 2017, 05:08:05 PM »
That was just a self-intended joke Ken to myself and couple of other ex-spaders :)
Back then when we played spades, we mistakengly believed it was somehow similar to bridge. Having just 1 round of bidding, not seeing dummy, spades always being a trump that one can't lead unless already broken, etc etc - gives you so few data that you'd need time to think about. That's why board in that game rarely overpasses 2 and half minutes.

But why you think 5 min average is too few? Sure we all need 8+ mins for tough ones, but don't forget so many that are 1h-4h, lead and claim; takes less then a min, just as an example.

But, as you all don't see this idea viable, we can just forget about it, and eventually will find something better to have it hapening in IAC during long summer months.

I just checked and yes, TD can deal predefined hands to team matches. One obstacle less. Not that in this format that would be needed, as only 1 Team Match is running at the time.
When we run trnys, 12 boards are done within more or less 1 hour. So, 3 times 8 boards would take around 2 hours, with reseats and all. But, imho, 3 times 6 boards is just fine too. (funny to mention that back in spades we'd run 3 times 8 boards in 50 mins approx).
Also, when I said total points, it could be IMP's sum, or total, does not matter. All but MP or Bam as they assure ties. I don’t think this idea is based on pure luck. Lemme give an example with pairs signed up in ladder. So: Pair A = nekthen & Friizi  //  Pair B = thornbury & jojah45  //  Pair C= southuist & slamgoing  //  Pair D= Kusum_P & ruth_p . Please see the scheme at:
http://tinypic.com/r/28wpi6s/9

That way, every pair will be exactly once in team with each other pair, and have other 2 as opposition. I'd think luck factor is pretty much minimized here. And since Monster Points are worth nothing, why not give them to any kind of competitive play within club if that would add salt and pepper and attract players?
I only suggested it to be Team Match as I am unsure if we can set trny with this kind of rotation. Also, I must admit I share your concern of having 8 (what a huge number) of people commit to be there. And I agree with Pam that it would have to be some pre-set time, for example sundays noon eastern, while Team Series is on hold.
Anyways, this was just an idea to fill as it seems pretty empty schedule IAC will offer over summer.

The IAC Café / An idea - Teams of 2
« on: June 20, 2017, 11:09:22 PM »
This was what we do back in spades while we simulated bridge duplicated.

So Teams of 2 require ONLY 2 tables. 3 rounds of 6 or 8 or whatever number of hands. In each round your pair will be teamed with different pair. Each pair gets raw sum of boards played and the one with most total points makes a winner.
Do you think this could pick up within IAC?
I can set it as trny limited to 8 people or 3 team matches (pre-registered) - and still need to check if TD can deal  to team matches or needs 2 teaching tables - but its doable one way or another.

Monster points given in those events could increase interest.

Sleight of Hand / Re: Yesterday, an example
« on: May 24, 2017, 04:56:45 PM »
Great post as always Ken : )

1st example: I don't think any of players at that table would object if you asked Pam (before making your decision what to bid) if Drury is ok, and if so - which one. Great many players that often play in IAC announce “please feel free to discuss”, as games in IAC are hardly Bermuda Bowl competitive, but rather great practice and friendly atmosphere (which was somehow ruined by player that replaced you, but luckily they left soon afterwards).

Another option is use Joe's sheet made exactly for casual pardships. It's still available at: https://tinyurl.com/jyw73px

As for 2nd example, I am in constant war with hand evaluation, and often, in fear to not underbid , I overbid, but that time chicken in me won and I settled for 3S.

Looking forward to hear opinions from others, thanks for posting!

IAC Matters / Re: Why I Want to Be a Member of IAC

The other alternative is that they decided teaching Bridge for free was not as attractive as giving private lessons for payment. I can't fault anyone who takes that stance, although my own view has always been that Bridge has given me a lifetime of enjoyment and I really don't mind putting something back into the game
How nice words, Oliver ! TY and thanks all other teachers   !H

I am one of those that came in for lessons - I would never had learned bridge if it wasn't for IAC.
When a friend challenged me to learn the game, he showed me bbo and suggested I join IAC and BIL. BBO learning software was the beginning and then I started reading all I could find on net, and imagine how lost i was to choose WHAT to learn, and whom to "trust". Finally when I could understand what 1NT was, I joined the 2 clubs, BIL on trial period of 3 months. At that time there was only 1 lesson running at hours I am normally in, in both BIL and IAC. In Bil teacher was SO slow, and spoke SO bad english, I couldn't understand 1/5 of what they said. My trial there was finished and I had no wish to become its member.
But in IAC, I found Shep. She opened whole new world to me. I'd sit there, quiet as mice and just swallow with eyes all she wrote. I couldn't follow Hondo's lessons as they were in odd hours, but thanks to Kia I religiously watched and saved movies of his lessons.
Now at Oliver's class I am having such wonderful time. It's fantastic mental exercise, combined with great humor, place where to meet good players and even better persons. And what ultimate joy it is when u finally make a correct bid LOL!

I will likely never be a great player, but I now adore this game, and want to give back little what IAC gave to me. So, do count on me to help in any way I can :)

Ken, please continue talk of hands and interesting deals.
Looks as most of us that enjoy reading your posts have nothing bright to say, but Oliver's idea of whole forum is great and your thoughts are very much appreciated : )

Very nice to hear your opinion Sally. If more players were interested in USA evening time, I am sure we would be able get a TD to run trnys. If they only would speak up and ask what is their prefference.
Many more also enjoy teams, and for sure soon new series will start.

As for teaching, lesson's subjects and time of sessions are chosen by the teacher, not much we can do but accept their good will give us free lessons at whatever hour is most appropriate for them.

That's very strange Ken.
Many teachers use that radio as Hondo for example. Oliver has been using it, and it's always same link: http://ocp.radio12345.com/

When you load that page, it should look as this screen shot (http://tinypic.com/r/9u51jt/9). There is nothing to install, or run. When Oliver is using it, as soon as you load the page, you should be able to listen - of course nothing happens now as he is not using it right now.

RogerPfi, autor of aaBridge, makes movies of Oliver's lessons, so we can watch them later if we missed any. They can be seen directly in his Google drive or downloaded and watched from your computer. Link for them is : http://tinypic.com/r/9u51jt/9
Lesson from yesterday is last, called 31__12__Against Precision.

IAC Tourneys / Re: Sunday Evening
« on: April 19, 2017, 04:53:34 PM »
As far as I know, only trnys still running are Saturday 11.30 am eastern, All Systems go with Pam, and Dulci's Sunday evening eastern, as it shows in IAC site Diary sub-page.

Maybe this last week was cancelled as it happens with most events that fall on big holidays, and it was Easter.
