Bot genius?
« on: October 11, 2017, 05:13:39 PM »
Playing with the bots, partner bot opens 1 !D and I responded 2 !S, a Soloway jump shift as the bots play. . No opposition bidding, the auction goes
1 !D     2 !S
3 !D     3 !S
4 !C     5 !S

What do you make of this?

Where I come from, this asks partner to bid 6 !S with second round control in hearts.

Partner Bot passed. His shape is 1=1=6=5.  A brilliant pass since 6 !S can be beaten.

Against 5 !S LHB (left hand Bot) led the A and another heart. !H A and a trump switch beats it. I win on the  board, throw a heart on the !C A and finesse the !D, losing to the K. Off 1 in 6. Except LHB does not have a trump! Ah, but it can be beaten. Underlead the !H A at T1, RHB wins and plays a trump.

Not likely! Still, 5 !S making 6 was an above average result. I figured for zip after I saw that only the most inspired defense beats 6 !S.

I have a sneaking suspicion that partner Bot did not understand my 5 !S  bid, he simply looked at the 10 highs he opened on, figured that they had not gotten any better during the auction, and got out at the first opportunity. But maybe he is just brilliant.  We will go with that!

My cynical side says that this is "double-dummy" bidding. The Bot knows 6 !S can (theoretically) be beaten, so he doesn't go there :)

On these Bot tourneys the bots definitely do not see each others hands. There was a hand I posted a while back where I ran the diamond suits (trumps) and each defending bot had values both in hearts and in spades. I came down to

!S 9
!H A43

!S A6
!H K6

I have three more tricks and three only as long as they get their discards straight, but they both saved spades and pitched hearts.

The bots seem to not have their act together on discards. Since posting that I have seen that others are aware of this.

One that surprised me: I was playing in a trump contract and led small from the board toward my AQxx. Up came the K on my right from Kx, playing the card he would soon be known to hold if he instead had played the x.  I didn't think that they were up for that sort of thing. For a hunk of wires and metal, they are decent. But they do need to work on their carding.
