IAC & Master Solvers Club / Re: 2023 APRIL MSC
« on: March 01, 2023, 03:42:26 AM »
PROBLEM A: 3 Diamonds - considered pass in hopes that diamonds will run, but why not just make them trump in a partial
PROBLEM B: 3 Clubs -
PROBLEM C: 1 Notrump- seems normal
PROBLEM D: 2 Spades - not passing up a hint, plus its what I would really do at the table
PROBLEM E: 2 Clubs- showing the crummy clubs again but at least there are 6 of them
PROBLEM F: 1 Club - flipped a coin on this. the OLD school is a 1c bid, but the new school is 1s bid, but maybe this is the kind of hand that made old school right.
PROBLEM G: 3 Hearts - flipping coins on this one too. I really thought about 4h. but 3h has to be ok too as control showing, I already did not show three hearts I think, but not supporting after the 2s bid. 3s is tempting too, but I couldn't talk myself into that one being a panel bid.
PROBLEM H: Spade 10- comforted that several others chose this lead.

PROBLEM B: Pass
PROBLEM C: 3 Hearts
PROBLEM D: 1 Notrump
PROBLEM E: 6 Clubs - glad to see others have made this choice too. now I don't think I'm going out on a limb
PROBLEM F: 4 Spades
PROBLEM G: 3 Spades
PROBLEM H: Spade 2

Aha, Surprise! I am going first.
A - X. It's a 3 loser hand, so a suit won't do it for initial bid.
B - 3H, going low with this I hope. not ready to bail out on 3s.
C - 3nt. i think this is going low, but I can't quite think of how to proceed.
D - Pass, 2h is in consideration, but I'll bail out on the psuedo diamond fit.
E - 3H. It's not checking on heart fit, that's already denied, but it's letting p know I don't have club stop. so passing the buck.
F - 3H. asking for a stopper.
G - X and bidding hearts later. but could be convinced of a spade fit.
H - 3H for now. I'm going to test that heart stopper

FILED my answers. stuck with them all.

ON the 5C, I realized I had locked myself into a false dichotomy of either pass or 4m. You all know I hate 4m, but the panel is usually more aggressive, so it finally dawned on me that if they were aggressive, then they would bid game.
I stand by a heart lead!

Looks like I'm going
A- X but I am torn by the idea of 2nt, still thinking.
B - 3S, partner should understand I have no diamonds and am checking on 3nt.
C - 2D, going more aggressive and inviting
D - really leans toward 4C, but considering pass (but panel punishes me when I don't choose a 4m)
E - Pass. I don't mind weak opens with a 4 card major, but I don't do it with a good honor in the 4 card major. (I think I have a recent one saved where a p bid that way and squashed our M game)
F - 3S, but only because I appear not to be able to bid 4nt
G- 3C
H - 10!H . Choosing the short major in hopes of hitting pards suit, and the 10 will hopefully alert p to my shortness.

PROBLEM A: Double  -BTW, this is the spot for my Coyote convention. 1h-2S is so common, I think its worth carving out some specific meanings for things like 2nt, 3c and 3d. Because you can't "invite" with 3S (cuz it forces to game). we can use these other bids to show things. 3D shows the good heart raise, 3c shows an interest in a minor., 3h weak raise
PROBLEM B: 3 Spades
PROBLEM C: 2 Diamonds
PROBLEM D: 5 Clubs  - Changed my mind and went BIG
PROBLEM E: Pass
PROBLEM F: 3 Spades
PROBLEM G: 3 Clubs
PROBLEM H: Heart 10

PROBLEM A: 4 Spades - going aggresive as I hope the panel will.
PROBLEM B: Double - I'm not sure I have diamonds stopped. so going a different way
PROBLEM C: 3 Diamonds - thought hard about 3h too
PROBLEM D: 3 Hearts - very obviously a cue bid raise here.
PROBLEM E: 3 Hearts - I'm also going for a game try, but going 3h instead.
PROBLEM F: Double - strongly considered the heart bid, but settled on X
PROBLEM G: 3 Diamonds - I hate this bid, but this is what I settled on. probably pass is best.
PROBLEM H: Diamond 4 - this seems normal, but I see lots of people leading the 6 for some reason. I can't bring myself to lead the doubleton spade.

@ken:  Here is something I put together with Doug Smix. It is beautifully named Coyote Run-outs...

PROBLEM A: 3 Diamonds  - Really wanted to bid 2S, and in the real world think I would, but I can't ignore the hint.
PROBLEM B: Double - Of course, one never takes the hint on problem B of MSC and avoiding 2nt. 2c is such an underbid I can't stomach it. X and a followup bid should clarify somethings and might get something useful from partner.
PROBLEM C: 2 Hearts - and taking the hint on problem C of MSC is even worse, so not 2c. but 2h =supporting with support.
PROBLEM D: Double - always take the hints from MSC, so X must equal I have stuff and can play in spades too. won't settle for less than 4S.
PROBLEM E: 5 Clubs - If I could be sure that 4c was forcing, I think I would try it. but I'm getting to game here not expecting to make anything more.3nt was considered, but its awfully thin with one spade stopper, and hearts not likely to run since they are all on my right. (pard doesn't have them nor does the 3S bidder).
PROBLEM F: 3 Diamonds - could be an overbid, but going with it.
PROBLEM G: 1 Spade - I decided to do what I think I would really do at the table, which is to make a bid in third seat that can be light. I see now that lots of others chose hearts, and that makes sense too. but I decided If p doesn't have 4 spades, they will be lost completely if I start with 1h since I will never be bidding 2s at some later time. meanwhile if p bids 1nt, I am going to take another bid at 2h and suffer the consequences non-vulnerable. I doubt if we are winning this contract, and I want to get in the way with a low 1s preemptive bid.
PROBLEM H: Club Ace - hate doubleton leads, but this is a good spot for one. But Ace and setting up some more clubs for them to have to ruff seems right to me.

about that 4S - 3 hand:

This is actually with agreements from both sides. not really misunderstandings.
2D is a multi bid, common in Europe but forbidding in ACBL as we all know, showing a long major (other possibles sometimes)
AT the beginning of the match, I let Todd know that we would be playing the classic option"1" defense against multi.
[x = takeout of spades, 2h = take out of spades, etc]
the ops, thinking mostly correctly that Todd is showing some spades, makes the assumption that their pard has hearts, and jumps to 4h!
I double with 4H and and 10 points and Todd showing a takeout bid. I think we have them.
Then original bidder corrects to 4S because thats what they really have.
We don't double because now the waters are murky on who has what. but it was a score for us -3!
