Thanks guys, I was going to bid 2, not being aware that BWS uses inverted minors. So now I am supposed
to bid with my hands tied behind my back and on crutches? I am not bidding 1♠ because with Ken's sample
opening hand I would always raise to 2♠ in preference to rebidding 1NT with a useful ruffing value in clubs, a
small doubleton in an unbid suit. I'm hardly left with any choice but to bid 1NT, as much as I dislike that.

A - 1NT - not prepared to force to game.

B - 1 - for me this is "automatic", especially opposite a partner like myself
who likes full values for an opening bid.

C - Pass - forced by the system, would normally bid 2♣ but am guessing
that in BWS that would be "inverted".

D - 4S - but I do like all those fancy alternatives which may work on a good day.

E - 2 - not 1NT with an unbalanced hand.

F - 4S - should make even if partner has only three spades.

G - 2S - with 1NT a close second choice.

H - H2 - a spade lead could help a declarer with three spades to an honour; partner only needs
one of the top four heart honours for a heart lead to get our side off to a racing start. Responder is not
promising much in the heart department for an initial 1 response on a weak hand (1NT rebid).

PROBLEM A: 2 !H. And I do not like it.
Did I say I do not like it?
I chose 1NT, planning to bid 3 next - but then I could have bid 3 anyway according
to BWS since that gives the same message. The only advantage of 1NT is that partner's
rebid might be illuminating. If the hand is a misfit I really don't want to be in game, which
is why I didn't choose 2, but hey - you didn't like that bid anyway.  :)

PS Thanks for the info that my planned rebid of 3H over 2D shows good diamond support.
That's a new one on me, so looks like I'll have to tread softly on this site. A pity we can't
use bids that mean what they say.

I failed to notice that partner's 2 bid was a jump. Possibly I would then
have elected to bid 4.

For reasons discussed in a subsequent post, we are allowing hoki to change his bid on Problem A.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for getting in touch. I'm still very new to this, so I was under the
impression that I couldn't change it once I had submitted my answers.
Now you're suggesting that I can - unless this is just for the purpose of
our IAC discussion group.

You've made me think about the whole problem again and I'm inclining
more and more towards changing my bid and, if I could, I would change
it to 5.

A   3C, diamond support. We could be cold for 5D, which is why I don’t
    agree with pass.

B   4S, I don’t have more than what I promised with my initial 2C response.

C   1S, and hope to survive. I can sympathise with a 2C rebid despite only
five clubs but this hand is simply too strong in high cards for that bid.

D   2C.

E   1S, I agree with the ‘bang for buck’ argument against the 1NT overcall
and I prefer to try and play in my major than a minor.

F   4NT, with five spades partner might have bid 4S rather than double.

G   b5, colour me yellow but I don’t want to hang partner for responding 1H
on five hearts to the queen and out.

H   Heart Q, uninspired I know, but that’s me.

I was disappointed with your response to Problem H.
other possibilities.  Please reconsider your decision to not share this one time.
The ♠5 - and I never said I had a good reason for this lead. I shall be the first
to admit it was crazy if it turns out that a spade lead is going to help declarer
set up the 12th trick. I'm a bit worried that a heart lead will help declarer in
that suit. No one ever said that opening leads are a science. Thanks for
challenging me on the suppression of my answer.  ;)

FEBRUARY GUESSES:
Yes - "guess" is the right word and I could easily be swayed to changing any of my guesses. There is hardly a single problem that can be solved by referring to the books.

PROBLEM A: 3 !C  because it communicates .. extras, shows nine of my cards ..
If partner's values are in hearts I'm happy to stop at the two level. It's only a 15-count and if partner has only six there is no guarantee that we're going to be safe at the three level.

PROBLEM B: 1 !S .
My choice of 3 allows us to bow out if partner responded on a subminimum hand and five hearts, in which case we could be playing 1♠ on a 3-3 fit.

PROBLEM C: (a3) 1 !C | 2 !H .
Me too - but I might have been tempted by an option that was not even available, namely rebidding 2♣.

PROBLEM D: 2 !C .
Agree.

PROBLEM E: 2 !H . Yes, I’m short a heart. I’m open to suggestions.
Agree.

PROBLEM F: 2NT. Really just a guess. East has few values and is short in diamonds. Partner and East have a minimum of eight hearts between them, maybe more, so partner hopefully has hearts stopped.
1NT - but same reasoning.

PROBLEM G: 3 !C .
Agree - except that I don't think it's that close.

PROBLEM H: !H 7. No particular reason. This looks quite normal, standard, and boring.
All good reasons for not choosing a heart. I hate lead problems, especially at IMPs because
huge swings could result from an unlucky choice. I'm too scared to admit what my answer is
but am willing to gloat later if it turns out to be the winner.
