problemA-->  Last time this HINT appeared, it was the winning choice, but it didn't look so much like this.  I am sticking to my knee-jerk feeling  of splintering with a lovely 8-count.
                                                              ---Four Clubs---

problemB-->  In real life we are arriving in the club slam  right NOW.  But since north is a bidder without flaws,  we can safely trott out GERBER,  in case he has a perfectly legitimat "quackery"  ie:  QJx, KQx, KQJxx, xx !
                                                               ---Four Clubs---

problemC-->  BLACKWOOD!  hell--pard might have all 3 aces!  If he has the expected two, nobody asked us if we will shoot the moon  or not, but for partnership discipline I will do so
                                                              ---Four Notrump---

prpblemD-->  WHAAT??  4 !H   in a heartbeat.  a 2 !S  "trial bid" is just daisy-picking (unless you want to raise pard's 2NT to 3..or pass it).  This hand would never show up except in some fancy quiz situation.  For now,  I ignore the possible trial-bid of two notrump  from our side...... ???

Problem G:>>  Are they going to 4!S or mor no matter what I do?  Then i better let partner know they are serious about it with a triple jump.  Are they willing to stand down, rightly or wrongly?  Then I like the spade splinter that gets us to 3NT.  Might we have eight  hearts?  We really shouldn't care.
                                                          ---  ?  ---
Problem H:>>  Partner may have up to 5 points on this auction   (12 I see and typically  23-24 held by the opponents. )        I need to get unbusy in one of these side suits, and I choose diamonds.  The lead problems lately have been friendly lately to south flinging unsupported diamond honours out there,  so....

Regarding problem B, I imagine the old wisdom "A weak Notrump containing 3 aces always indicates putting the pedal to the metal" is on their mind.  Oops!-we haven't actually  shown a 12-14 balanced have we, though a couple of our star quizzers whould prolly have done so.   Anyway, if we die in 5Diamonds it should have play, and it is IMPS.  I want to keep the ball rolling if we have slam.  My actual first choice was three spades-not four diamonds after all.

HOOOORAY AND GOOD RIDDANCE TO THE DISGUSTING AUGUST" SET!  (So many with a smorgasbord of  no answer) I hope never to see again-and I have looked at or participated here since Viet Nam  ended).

first look on prob. A  we notice we have almost never  seen a better dummy for the "misery preference"   to 2 !H .   That  means I have a splinter for north's diamonds.   I hope he will forgive me  for blocking his  "blackwood"   but he should not hang me for not having mega trumps,  his  !H K-x,  and the stiff , but only king-high spades (i bet HE has the missing spade ace?)
                                                          ---Five Clubs---

Problem B:>>  Ahh the ANTI-SPLINTER finally shows up (see my profile)    ___---Four Diamonds---

Problem C:>>  Do we see 3 choices?   nope.     ---Five Clubs---

Problem D:>>
OK, west has got me convinced:  Partner doesn't have more than 4 clubs, so he must have 4 spades, and/or 3+ hearts so reaching out for a major game is not a wild stab in the dark...
                                                                         ---Three Spades---

Problem E:>>  My first think is to push with 3 !S   AFTER the opps correct to 3 !H . The LAW says one of us can make 9 tricks.  If the enemy gets to FOUR Hearts before I ever mention my spades, then I have wimped out, and will stay fixed.  The temptation to mention those clubs NOW, and hope to later say 3 Spades is tugging at me, but will that suck partner into a definite overbid?

                                                                      ---Pass/Three Clubs??---

BWS section E  "Competition After Our Minor Suit Opening":
After our minor-suit opening and an overcall:(a) a double is negative through three spades.
So, how does that allow a double of 3S to win the quizz, with  xxxx, Kx, KJx, AKxx, huhh??   And why did 11 panelists  choose this?  Granted, the other 3 or 4 possible answers are  yukk

We need a guest appearance by Kenberg -- who can possibly explain what we are trying to accomplish by leading ANYTHING OTHER THAN A TRUMP  on this problem H.   I have tried and tried to cook somthing up  and failed miserably :(

IAC & Master Solvers Club / Re: 2023 AUGUST MSC
« on: June 09, 2023, 10:18:49 PM »
PROBLEM A:>>  Blackwood is not good enough (unless pard has ONLY TWO keycards !?) The chain of cue bids that I have come up with  is to first show my stiff spade,  then rebid  5 !D  over partner's 5 !C -- then leave the final push to north.  Rather than doing that, I'm about ready to just raise us to 5 !H .  Passing 4 !H  is out.
Put these two 3 key-card dummys across from our J, QJxxxxx, Ax, QJ8x ... (a) KQx, AKxx, xxx, AKX or
(b) Qxx, AKxx, Kx, AKxx.  (a)  is near hopeless and (b) is ice cold, and we are out of room for more inquiries below slam level.  The only try that gets partner to help solve the diamond problem is to cue  that QJxx!  Then there is a chance he will find a cue in diamonds convenient ifhe has that king, or that he will have 4 1/2 to 5  quick-tricks if he decides to cue the spadeA  ,above the 5 heart level.
                                                 ---Five Clubs---

PROBLEM B:>>  ---Four Diamonds---     What else?  Are we supposed to admit to having 2 baby hearts now instead?

Problem C:>>  impossible.  will roll my 4-sided dice on June 30th, probably.

Problem D:>>  This is a full ace better than a double of 1 !S .  Almost a "breather" to raise here, compared to #@!!&* problem C.   If you switch the suit doubled to a minor, I really consider raising to game.-(holding back because 1NT after a X of one SPADE is sometimes done without the values it should have)
                                                 ---Two Notrump---

Problem E>>  Cannot think of any bid that isn't a diamond raise.  What level of Diamonds is higher than "four" and lower than "six"??
---Five Diamonds---                              Notoce I expect the law of total tricks number to be off by about THREE:  Trumps being  7 + 8= 15, while Tricks being 7 + 11 = 18...wazzup with that??

Problem F:>>  Passing 1 spade is completely wrong,  so "D" for disagree;  2NT over pard's 2H might be unanimous,  so "DA_";
As for part three, we should realize that so far we have not shown ANY useful values  for a red-hand 6-5  , so 4 !D  now is pretty wimpy, given our black ACE and lovely  heart Q....I would hope partner has AKxxx+AKxxxx  or better and give him 5 !D , but maybe I'm dreaming.  Disagreeing with four diamonds so i vote...
                                                      ---DAD---

Problem G:>>  I am about equally afraid of a heart trump suit getting blown sky high as of any contract having three inescapable holes :( .  Almost ready to wimp out and bid four-only   !D s!
                                                ---Four Hearts---

The comments for  PROBLEM F supported an idea  that I have seldom heard. VERY seldom.  We have responded 1 !H  with         Jxxx, QJxxx, Q, xxx and heard pard rebid 1 !S
Now, Moderator located 7 or 8 quotes that state "I would have passed  one spade......"   or  "I seriously considered passing one spade"  ( and who knows--maybe some unquoted panelists joined this lest?)
I may be an extreme leftist in saying that 1 !S  rebid by opener is FORCING -- unless the response was completely bogus but i never guessed that there would be THAT MANY experts  who call  passing an option, let alone preferable with jxxx and an actual 6-count

problem D  is surely the "lead" problem...  stiff diamond?  or our club suit (less juicy than usual,  since tapping them out  is already accomplished?

Problem A:>>  A simple jump to  5 !S  looked fine to me at first, but why shouldn't that show an even bigger hand  with two diamond losers??
                                                                 ---5 Diamonds---

Problem B:>>                                            ---Three Clubs---

Probleam C:>>  12 points,  pretty-good 6-card suit  looks like "1H...2H...3H"  to me.  no need to commit to some half-baked third bid when pard can steer us to port with HIS 3rd bid.
                                                                    ---Three Hearts---

Problem D:>>  My May First shot of leaving in the double of 2 spades is hereby cancelled!.  Take out a deck of cards and give partner 9-10 pts , void in spades and four (five??) hearts and 9 minor cards--preferably  4 diamonds and 5 clubs. ( My first effort gave our side a slam in clubs, when Lefty happened to be dealt  Kx in clubs! ). Meanwhile, the opps  had an easy ride to 7 tricks in their 2 spades.
Really, pard is bound to have very decent clubs since his hearts are Kxxx or worse and he has zero spades.
                                                                    ---Five Clubs---

Problem E:>>   A stretchy jump-rebid to 3 !H  becomes a very comfortable  non-jump, when opp intervene, If you're needing to bid a third time then  "hearts, hearts, clubs"  is better than some alternative.
                                                                  ---Three Hearts---

On problem F, where we were asked to raise 1 heart or not raise it  with  KJx, Kxx, AKxxx,  98, ZIA's comment"If you don't know by now that this the winning bid, it's probably too late." infuriated me. Then I noticed  the 72% agreement from the panel which changed my mood to merely  'depressed'.  I have played about 400,000 bridge hands since 1963,  and raising hearts with this hand is not even on my  "let's have a little fun" list,  so I guess it's well and truly  too late for me :o
