IAC vs ACOL - Challenge #11 Sunday, January 8th 2023
« on: December 13, 2022, 10:14:22 PM »
Time flies, yet another year is to be gone!!
And in the New Year, a new challenge awaits us  :) Please note that it will be held on the 2nd Sunday of the month.

Acol deservedly won last challenge, but  IAC remains on the lead, yay!!!

This month we'll hold the event on Sunday, January 8th 2023
Deadline for registration is Wed, January 4th @ 2359utc, after which we can not accept new registrations.
We'll have 2 starting times, as usual:
*  1200 UTC, 7am NY, noon London, 17:30 New Delhi, 1am Auckland
*  2000 UTC, 3pm NY, 8pm London, 01:30 New Delhi, 9am Auckland
All boards are random, but previously saved in sets of 10 hands, so that all those starting at 1200utc will play the same boards, and all those starting at 2000 utc will also play the same boards, but different from those at noon.
Each match is of 20 boards, played in two stanzas of 10, changing opponents at half-time. Scoring is by IMPs, without barometer.

How to register:
Please form your teams and choose a captain, who should mail IAC.at.BBO@gmail.com (and please CC me: sanja@sapo.pt), stating your team name, BBO usernames of the pairs in the team, and which session you prefer (earlier or later, either or both). If you want, you can play in both sessions, assuming we have enough opposing ACOL teams.
Each team can have more than 2 pairs, but there will be only 2 stanzas, the captains should inform us which pair plays in which session.
Important: Captains, please get basic CC from each pair, and or include system notes when registering the team. They can be as short as "2/1 udca" or "modified precision with journalist leads", the rest will be explained at the tables.

You can also register here in forums, just make a post as a reply to this topic, but please do not edit old posts, or we might miss any new information. There is limited number of teams we can accept, and first registered is first served, so make sure you reserve your place. Even if you do not have full team, register and let us know later players' usernames. Furthermore, if you are just a pair, please post here on forums and match up with another pair to form the team. Or as a single player, just say you'd like to play, and in which session, we'll try to pair you up with another single member : )

Thanks Blu, I added you for the later session. But sorry, I can not use full name, or BBO will truncate it to first 20 characters, max allowed for team name.
And, sure, we'd love to have you in early session too, Ann already needs teamies!

So we got 2+4 teams, thanks all  !H :D
Registrations are now closed. I'll send our lists to ACOL and later email Captains who are their opponents.
The rest is still same ole same ...

Please be sure all your players are online and ready to start playing 10 minutes before scheduled start time. Also, please tell players to NOT be engaged in another game, BBO changed team matches setup, and now we can NOT invite any player that is playing elsewhere, even solitaire. If you need any changes in your team, add subs etc, please message bbo_iac online timely on sunday.

Have your system, leads, carding agreed and announce when you meet the opponents. Emphasize to your players that they must alert all artificial bids, not by convention name, but by what it means to their partner. Do not forget ACOL players are unaware that 1M-2m is GF in 2/1, that's artificial and must be alerted, as well as 1M-1N as 1 round forcing, just to mention few.

See you all on Sunday, wishing IAC teams best of luck and lotsa fun for all!

Hugs, Sanya (Curls77)

That said, I am sorry to announce that the decision was reached to stop these challenges, at least for the time being.
The reason is that most ACOL players felt that they were in disadvantage, as our side does not always alert, or not always correctly, bids and methods used.

And what was far worse is that in the last challenge the tone used at tables was not at all polite, but sarcastic, condescending, and plain rude. NOT at ALL tables, mind. Some of our teams are congratulated for always being fair opponents, giving their best to alert complicated bids correctly. But sadly, not all did that.

Ever since the 2nd challenge, there was another problem. Our club had at the time 500+ members, but we only got 8 teams. Then some of them lost their games, and since then never joined challenge again.
So we kept playing with IAC's best players, while ACOL has players of all skills, making such games quite painful.

And somewhere along the road, the idea behind this challenge was lost, it was to provide members of both clubs to play in friendly relaxed games, helping them to learn to defend against different, unknown systems. Again, sadly, some of our teams forgot about this, and their only goal was to WIN.

For those that need to refresh the memory about what is expected while playing in IAC events, please review IAC Code of Conduct: http://iac.pigpen.org.uk/SettingTables.php
quote:  If an opponent asks you for further explanation of your alert, answer them politely, even if you think it's obvious.
