SOLUTIONS FOR:
Todd Holes

PROBLEM A: Double
PROBLEM B: 3 Spades
PROBLEM C: 2 Clubs
PROBLEM D: 4 Clubs
PROBLEM E: Pass
PROBLEM F: 4 Notrump
PROBLEM G: 3 Clubs
PROBLEM H: Heart 10

A couple changes from my first choice. Initially, I went with the aggressive choices. Both changes reverted to the more conservative route. I feel very confident about three or four . . . but "C" and "E" are complete guesses.

January Guesses:

Problem A: X. Double seems clear. Too much to pass vul at IMPs. A close second is 2NT. East's failure to further the preempt increases the possibility that partner has three or more spades.

Problem B: 3 !S. IMPs, vul. Too much to give up on a 9 trick game.

Problem C: 2 !C. Originally thought showing a limit raise best, but will now go the other end of the spectrum with a simple raise. It is, ostensibly, a flat 10. At MP it would be a easier to choose 1NT, but I'm going low--even though the panel more often shoots high. (Heaven help me--do I see that Blue also went with 2 !C here?)  ;)

Problem D: 4 !C. With Pass the other option.

Problem E: Pass. Changed my mind here as well. With four spades, I do not like the preempt. Pass is what I would do at the table. Previously, my 1 !D was my attempt to guess the panel's choice--always my goal. But I think they will be wildly split among the three (or four?) choices. Hopefully the Pass is the plurality choice.

Problem F: 4NT. Conveys a lot of information. Avoids the lead through the !S K and possible ruff. I look forward to the panel's opinion. Fun problem.

Problem G: 3 !C. Enough to probe for game. This shows my values and where I live.

Problem H: !H T. Passive. My gut reaction lead without much thought. If I think hard I may go in another direction.

December guesses:

PROBLEM A: 3 Diamonds
I also considered 2 !D to find out about a possible spade fit as low as possible. But the splinter conveys a lot of information, showing a lot of black cards.

PROBLEM B: 4 Diamonds
Aggressive, but since I did not first double should describe a distributional hand just under that threshold.

PROBLEM C: 2 Hearts
I have a strong hand, so 2 !H seems best. I worry though about this being directed by Kleinman.

PROBLEM D: Pass
Take the plus.

PROBLEM E: 3 Clubs
Bid what I have.

PROBLEM F: 2 Diamonds
Tactical. A double would let west off the hook. This will elicit the presumed 2 !H from west and if it comes round to me I can show my spades.

PROBLEM G: 3 Notrump
Very tempting to try 6 !C. But I rate it as a bit less than 50%.

PROBLEM H: Spade 5
Not crazy. I actually like this. ;)

Blu, I get your !S 5 lead. I don't think it crazy at all.

On H, East's shape seems to be 4=1=3=5 or similar. So if west has the presumed five hearts, that leaves partner with five also.

I'm leading the !H T.

P.S. Still not fond of lead problems.

NOVEMBER MSC GUESSES

SOLUTIONS FOR:
Todd Holes

PROBLEM A: 3 Notrump
I had a chat with Hamman. A misfit in all suits, but maybe we can build our tricks in the Moysians?

PROBLEM B: 2 Notrump
Pass is also tempting at these colors.

PROBLEM C: 3 Diamonds
This one stumps me. Pass? 3NT? 3H?

PROBLEM D: 3 Spades
Pass seems too timid. That leaves me with a simple raise.

PROBLEM E: 3 Diamonds
Generic game try that highlights a possible 9-trick game.

PROBLEM F: Double
Several on this panel like six card suits to overcall at the two level. That heart suit barely looks like five.

PROBLEM G: 3 Diamonds
Game is possible. I need to let partner in on it.

PROBLEM H: Spade 8
Passive. Sorry partner! An attempt to make sure partner also hates my leads.

Problem H:>>  Fourth in longest & strongest (but not underleading in  Ace suit) What else??
                     ---Diamond 6 ---
Although I am planning to lead a trump . . . Diamond 4?

Opening Leads
Against suit contracts:
(ii) Spot-card leads: third-highest from even length; lowest from odd length

Sleight of Hand / Re: iac v acol hand 7 1st set: opinions please
« on: September 06, 2022, 03:30:34 PM »
Getting back to overcaller's hand, I doubt I would make the 3 !H call with that heart suit. I would want more muscle in the presumed trump suit to be assured of setting up tricks. So maybe if I exchanged the !C A with a small heart. And added a Ten. !H AKT986? The hand shown has the right values, not the right suit.

To double rather than 3 !H?

Something like 4=5=0=4 or 4=5=1=3 or possibly 3=5=1=4? But with the values to justify it. Maybe 15-16 HCP?
